SportDOG Rechargeable SBC-R-E No Bark Collar Manual

HOW THE SPORTDOG NOBARK SBC R-E FUNCTIONS

The SportDOG NoBark R-E Bark Collar uses several features designed to shorten the training phase and promote good behaviour:

  • A patented sensor system offers the most reliable bark detection available. The unit delivers a static correction via the contact points only if it detects BOTH vibrations from the vocal cords AND the sound of the bark.
  • Three user-selectable modes allow you to choose how corrections are delivered:
  1. The patent-pending Temperament Learning (indicated by green light, see mode chart for example on page 7) mode tracks the number of corrections needed to substantially reduce (and in most cases eliminate) the number of nuisance barks. The system provides 10 levels of static correction. It begins with a low-level correction (Level 0). However, if excessive barking continues, the correction intensity will increase with each successive bark until the barking stops. This correction level becomes the starting level the next time the dog barks. Once the dog has learned to reduce the barking, the initial warning corrections are reduced.
  2. In Progressive Correction mode (indicated by blue/green light, see mode chart for example on page 7), the correction starts at the lowest level and progresses to the next level (to a maximum of Level 9) each time your dog barks within 30 seconds of the previous bark. If your dog does not bark again within 30 seconds, the correction will be reset to the lowest level (Level 0).
  3. In the User-Selected Correction mode (indicated by blue light, see mode chart for example on page 7), the user presets the correction level (0-9) that will be used every time the dog barks.

Note: As a built-in safety feature, if your dog barks 15 times or more within a 80 second period, the NoBark R-E will automatically shut off for 3 minutes. This safety feature is active in all three modes of operation.

Important

  • DO NOT attach a leash to the NoBark R-E. You may put a separate non-metallic collar on your dog’s neck and attach a leash. Note: Be sure the extra collar does not interfere with the contact points.
  • Your dog may wear a harness for attaching a leash and/or tags while wearing the NoBark R-E.
  • Before playing with your dog, remove the NoBark R-E. The activity may cause your dog to bark, which could lead to him associating the play with the correction.
  • Never leave the NoBark R-E on for more than 12 consecutive hours.
  • We do not recommend that any of our products be used on aggressive dogs. We recommend you contact your local veterinarian or professional trainer to determine if your dog might be aggressive.

CHARGING

Be sure to charge the unit before using the NoBark SBC R-E for the first time by following the steps labeled below.

The NoBark SBC R-E has a rechargeable battery pack. When the unit shows that the battery is low (battery icon on the display shows 1 bar or less and/or the light flashes red 3 times every 5 seconds) it is time to recharge the unit.

Typical battery life is 3 to 6 months, depending on how frequently your dog barks. Nevertheless, due to greater use during your dog’s training, your first battery charge may not last as long. To save battery life, turn the NoBark SBC R-E off when not in use.

Follow these steps to charge the battery:
1. Remove the NoBark SBC R-E from your dog.
2. Plug the battery charger into a standard household receptacle.
3. Plug the other end of the battery charger into the NoBark SBC R-E charge port. The light will flash the sequence Green-Blue-Red to indicate that charging has started.
4. During charging, keep the NoBark SBC R-E in an open, well-ventilated area. The light will flash red twice every 10 seconds to indicate that charging is active.
5. When charging is complete, the battery charger will automatically shut off, preventing overcharging. The light will flash green twice every 10 seconds to indicate that charging is complete.
Note: The battery should fully charge in less than 4 hours.
6. Remove the battery charger from the charge port. The light will flash the sequence Red-Blue-Green to indicate the unit is no longer charging.
7. Unplug the battery charger.

Note: The NoBark SBC R-E will automatically turn off when the battery charger is connected to it. Thus, following a charge, turn the unit back on before using it.

Note: If the battery pack is very low (i.e. been used too long or stored for an extended period of time) it may take some time for the unit to indicate that charging has started. If the unit does not indicate that it is charging after 1 hour, please contact our Customer Care Center for help at 1-800-732-0144.

TO FIT THE NOBARK SBC R-E

Important: The correct fit and location of your NoBark SBC R-E is vital for effective operation. The contact points must have direct contact with your dog’s skin on the underside of his neck.

To guarantee a correct fit, make sure to follow these steps:
1. Ensure the NoBark SBC R-E is off.
2. Begin with your dog standing comfortably.
3. Put the NoBark SBC R-E high on your dog’s neck close to the ears. Center the contact points under your dog’s neck, touching the skin.
Note: It is sometimes required to trim the hair around the contact points to make sure that contact is consistent.
4. Examine the tightness of the NoBark SBC R-E by putting one finger between the end of a contact point and your dog’s neck. The fit should be snug but not constricting.
5. Let your dog wear the NoBark SBC R-E for several minutes, then recheck the fit. Check the fit again as your dog becomes more comfortable with the NoBark SBC R-E.

Important: Certainly not leave the NoBark SBC R-E on for more than 12 consecutive hours.

Important: For comfort, safety and effectiveness of this product please guarantee the following:

  • Check the fit to prevent excessive pressure by being able to insert one finger between a contact point and your dog’s skin.
  • Examine your dog daily for any symbols of a rash or sore.
  • Discontinue the use of the NoBark SBC R-E for a few days if a rash or sore is observed.
  • Go to your veterinarian if the condition persists beyond 48 hours.
  • Your dog’s neck and the contact points must be washed weekly with a washcloth and mild hand soap and then rinsed thoroughly.

A condition called Pressure Necrosis, which is a devitalisation of the skin due to extreme and prolonged contact against the contact points, may occur if the steps above are not followed.

WHAT YOU SHOULD EXPECT WHILE IN USE OF THE NOBARK SBC R-E

Important: Don’t leave your dog alone the first few times he receives a correction.

Put the NoBark SBC R-E correctly on your dog and wait nearby until he barks. Most dogs will recognize quickly that the NoBark SBC R-E is disturbing their urge to bark and will relax and stop barking.

As the correction might be startling or astonishing, some dogs may bark at the initial correction.

On infrequent occasions, a dog may get into a bark-correction-bark-correction cycle. If this happens, reassure your dog with calm, soothing tones.

As your dog relaxes, he will realize that if he becomes quiet, he will not receive more corrections. Of the few dogs that have this reaction, it usually arises only the first time they wear the NoBark SBC R-E.

You need to notice a decrease in your dog’s barking within the first couple of days that he wears the NoBark SBC R-E. Now, it is necessary to keep in mind the learning procedure remains incomplete.

Dogs will “test” the new learning experience and will increase their efforts to bark. This typically occurs through the second week a dog wears the NoBark SBC R-E.

If this does occur, remain consistent and do not alter your use of the NoBark SBC R-E. You must place the NoBark SBC R-E on your dog in every situation when you expect him to be quiet.

If your dog is not wearing the NoBark SBC R-E, he may resume barking and his learning would suffer a setback.

REGULAR MAINTENANCE

  • Check your dog’s neck for irritation (daily).
  • Check it of NoBark SBC R-E on the dog (daily).
  • Check if the battery needs to be recharged (weekly).
  • Clean contact points and wash the neck (weekly).

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Will my dog stop barking completely?

• The NoBark SBC R-E effectively and humanely stops barking when it is worn. It should only be worn during periods of unwanted barking.

Will another dog’s bark set off the NoBark SBC R-E?

• No

Is the NoBark SBC R-E safe and humane?

• Yes. The NoBark SBC R-E is designed to get your dog’s attention, not to punish him. However, the initial correction may startle your dog.

Will the NoBark SBC R-E work for my dog?

• The NoBark SBC R-E is safe and effective for all breeds and sizes of dogs, though it may be too large for dogs under 8 pounds to wear comfortably.

Can I leave the NoBark SBC R-E on my dog all the time?

• No. Never leave the NoBark SBC R-E on for more than 12 consecutive hours.

Is it possible for my dog to learn not to bark only when the NoBark SBC R-E is on?

• Yes. This is best accomplished by placing the NoBark SBC R-E on your dog only in situations where you never want him to bark, and never placing the NoBark SBC R-E on your dog in situations where you find it acceptable for him to bark.

I have more than one dog, but only one dog with a barking problem. Will it cause problems between the dogs if I keep them together?

• It should not be a problem, especially if you follow the procedures described in this guide.

Can I attach a leash to the NoBark SBC R-E?

• No. This can result in pulling the contact points too tightly against your dog’s neck. Attach a leash to a separate, non- metallic collar; making sure the extra collar does not put pressure on the contact points.
