Joining and Repairing a Dog Fence Wire:

  1. Expose the copper core by gently peeling off the wire coating.

Step 1 - Strip off the wire and expose the coper core

It would be best to use stripping tools such as a wire stripper or your handy pliers to gently remove an inch or a couple of Centimetres of HDPE coating of the wire.

It’s important to not break more than 2 or 3 strands of the 7 copper core strands or else you may have to start again. Then twist the 7 strands altogether to keep them intact and tidy.

  2. Create a ‘butterfly twist’ join by twisting the ends of the wires together.

Step 2 - Join the wires together using a Butterfly twist

Instead of using a dog fence wire joiners to connect the two wires what you could do is join them with a butterfly twist. With your 2 exposed wire ends, you can now join them together by twisting them around each other.

Refer to the image above to see if you’ve formed the right ‘butterfly twist’. You can use certain tools such as pliers to tighten the join and to clean it up.

  3. Make a knot adjacent to the twisted wire to secure and reinforce the repaired join.

Step 3 - Tie a knot near the Twisted part for stability

Our secret key to joining dog fence wires that last for ages is tying a knot closest to the join.

It is proven to substantially bolster the join, making it resistant to future breakage due to external forces applied to it.

  4. Make sure to wrap the exposed wire join with electrical tape.

Step 4 - wrap the exposed wire with electric tape for protection

Since the insulator of the wire join has been stripped off, now we need to replace it with a new one. That’s when we need the electrical tape the most.

Start just a little bit past the knot we made and wrap it in just one direction all the way to its exposed end. It is recommended to keep going past the tip of the exposed wire join a bit.

Fold the excess tape back, and wrap it back in the other direction to ensure that the exposed wire has been sealed off properly.

  5. For future use, create some slack by making a fold or 2 folds if possible.

Step 5 - make a slack for future use

The purpose of making a wire slack is to reserve a wire for future repairs. Even though we’ve made a very tough wire join, we may have future breaks and it’s always better to be one step ahead of things.

So to make a wire slack, just get a couple of inches or centimeter of the wire and fold it back again. Use the same electrical tape to hold the wires together. Finally, we’ve got a slack of wire in the system for future use.
